Go Your Own Way (with Brandon Stanton) – Episode 49 of Rants & Randomness

This is one of my favorite conversations I’ve ever had on Rants & Randomness. I absolutely cannot wait for you to hear this one.

I’m talking to the amazing Brandon Stanton. He’s the creator behind the popular photo storytelling platform Humans of New York. After being fired from his job as a bond trader in Chicago, Brandon moved to New York City with the goal of photographing 10,000 people.

The blog started in 2010, and quickly became more than just pictures of people New York City – it became all about the stories he would hear and conversations he would have with the people he photographed. In 2014, Brandon took the blog abroad featuring stories from all over the world. And he was invited to the Oval Office to photograph and interview President Barack Obama in 2015. He’s the author of two number-one New York Times bestselling books, Humans of New York, and Humans of New York: Stories, and his latest book, Humans comes out on October 6.

As of this recording, Brandon is finishing up a week of sharing Tattletales from Tanqueray a series of stories and images from my queen Stephanie, aka Lady Tanqueray. We’re talking about all that series, we’re talking about Brandon his story, how he started doing this work. And when he decided to use this platform in this way. During our conversation, we cover what he considers a stroke of luck that really kicked off Humans of New York to be what it is now. We cover how him being lost in his early 20s actually led him to this place. And honestly, we talked about Stephanie, and what she’s going through how she’s been receiving all the love everyone’s been giving.

This interview completely energized me! Brandon was so vulnerable, and it was amazing to hear him tell his own stories so we could get to know a little bit more about the man behind the pictures.

Be sure to follow Humans of New York on social media. That’s @HumansofNY on Instagram, Humans of New York on Facebook and you can also click here to pick up his new book or here to support him on Patreon. And much love to Chicago Recording Company, where I get the help needed to make these episodes come to life – even recording from home.

Congrats on a great convo. Brandon is one of my favorite human beings in the world. My then teenage son asked me to follow HONY on FB about 10 years ago when Brandon had all of 100,000 followers. Prior to that I was having trouble connecting with my then sullen moody and sometimes angry teenager but with HONY, we thankfully found something we both enjoyed very much and we would often talk each evening about all the amazing people featured by Brandon. My son is 24 now and we have an amazing relationship now and I will always be grateful for what Brandon did for us with his platform.

Great job with the interview. Brandon is an awesome man. I have loved his stories – did not realize there was a person behind Humans of New York. Have loved the Tanqueray series but have loved all his stories. It’s a privilege to read about ordinary people.

I like the way you listen and let the interviewee respond. Thanks Luvvie.

This was an awesome interview that provided insight into Brandon who I have supported since the HONY Mott Bridges Academy series. Luvvie was the perfect person to do it, and I hope to see in the near future, an interview between Luvvie and Ms. Stephanie.
