Hey y’all! This week, I’m bringing you a special crossover episode of Rants and Randomness.

On this episode, I’m feeling good about my Afrobeats playlist – I’ve been reading all the reviews that you’ve been sending my way, and I’m glad that it’s making you feel empowered during a difficult time. I’m ranting about the high road, and how some people use it as an excuse to hurt others. And I’m shining a spotlight on the Chicago Recording Company, where I record each episode of Rants and Randomness. Plus, I’m sitting down with Amanda Seales from Small Doses, who is best known for her work on HBO’s Insecure and Smart, Funny, and Black.

Feel Good

I had a hard time choosing a feel good this week – when a white woman can call the police to harass an eight-year-old girl with a lemonade stand, I don’t know how we’re supposed to stay positive. But then I took a look at some the feedback that you left for my Afrobeats playlist, and my week started to get a little better. Here are some of the reviews that you posted on iTunes:

My Rant

And since we’re already talking about racism, and the impact that it has on people of all ages and colors throughout the United States, I want to take a few minutes to explain why “taking the high road” is overrated. Because in a country where the Supreme Court can uphold a travel ban that targets Muslims, and where the federal government can separate family members at the border, taking the high road with racists will not produce the systemic changes that we’ve been looking for. Y’all know that I am not supporting violence; I am simply saying that there is a difference between being nice to try to appease an oppressor and being kind enough to stand in the gap for marginalized people, regardless of the way that some adults will come at you.

I also want to shine a spotlight on the Chicago Recording Company, where I have recorded each episode of Rants and Randomness since day one. I am so grateful for this team of talented men and women, who have put all of their time and energy into producing a high-quality podcast.
