Disney Music is Everything!
I’m not sure about you but I can’t reminisce about my childhood without thinking about Walt Disney films. They were less cartoons, more animated movies and they served as the background to my childhood. It’s probably the reason why I can’t ride bikes now. I was always in the house watching movies and whatnot. Yes. That’s exactly it. (O__o). Not only were the films awesome with their Happily Ever After, but their characters resonated with adults as much as children. But as good as the films were, the music they set to them were even more amazing.
But, for THE BEST Disney movie Soundtrack, I’ll have to obviously go with:
The Lion King
This is arguably the best Disney film in terms of EVERYTHING! Storyline, cinematography, and study in haters (Scar was THE KING of all Haters). On top of all of that, the soundtrack was EVERYTHING!!!
I could have 5 out of the top 10 Disney songs ever come from this movie. Most folks know all the words to “Hakuna Matata” and I dare it to come on without you busting it out. One of my twitfam folks said she went on a safari in Africa and sang it when she saw a warthog. LMAO! And I don’t know about you but “Circle of Life” gets me slightly misty. As those animals bowed to Simba, my thug is murked! i won’t lie. I was wondering why folks ain’t show me that respect when I was born. Oh. I’m not an heir to the throne to rule a whole land? Oh ok then. (-__-)
“Can you feel the love tonight” is also another thug tears-inducing song. It touches my soul on the inside part. “I just can’t wait to be King” was perfectly flashy like a true African. My favorite part is when Simba goes “Everybody look left, everybody look right. Everywhere you look i’m standing in spotlight.” He might as well have said “Wipe me Down.” YOU SEE HIM and he KNEW you saw him. Other songs I love: “He Lives in You”, “Be Prepared.” I was at the busstop yesterday JAMMING to “He Lives in You” and before I knew it, I was two-stepping. The people on the stop with me were giving me side-eyes but I cared none.
Yeah, the Lion King BEATS! Disney and Elton John put their FOOT in it. Lion King had the best soundtrack of all the Disney movie. If you disagree, you are wrong.
Random trivia: Although Jonathan Taylor Thomas was Simba’s speaking voice, Jason Weaver was his singing voice.
Another dope soundtrack:
The Little Mermaid
This is probably my second favorite Disney movie, and it’s soundtrack was also on point. It may have to do with the hilarity that was Sebastian the crab. His smile bears a striking resemblance to mine, showing ALL the teefs. I also stan for Triton, who was paid homage to Poseidon from Greek Mythology (I’m a geek for it). I ain’t gon lie either. Triton was all buff and stuff. He looked like Fabio with fish legs.
My favorite song in “Little Mermaid” was “Under the Sea,” which is a good time put to song (I do a great impression of Sebastian singing it). And you know Disney can’t have a movie without sappiness. “Kiss the Girl” was all romantical. It was like teenage dating anxiety set to song. iSwoon. All the song is missing is someone interjecting with “BOOM CHICKA WAH WAH” and some PG-13 #heaux-sh*t may have gone down. Ok, well, I guess that may not be appropriate for a kiddy flick. But it’s Disney. Same folks who had “SEX” spelled out in the smoke in a scene in the “Lion King.”
Sidenote: Ok let me quit spreading decade-old rumor. Word on the street is that it isn’t “SEX” but “SFX” which the Special Effects team put to give themselves props. I don’t know though. They may need more people. Anyway, back to Little Mermaid…
Oh, and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” is scary at me. It’s the perfect villain song. Ursula was perfectly evil! *Whispers* AM I the only one who thinks the muse for Ursula is Roseanne? *crickets* Fine. I’ll stand alone. HMPH!
To round out the top 5 movie soundtracks, I’ll say Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast and Pocahontas. I’ll even make a list of my Top 10 FAVORITE Disney movie songs. I picked these songs because they are the ones I find myself humming subconsciously. Or I know all the words.
My Top 10 Disney Songs
1. Hakuna Matata – Lion King
2. A Whole New World – Aladdin
3. Circle of Life – Lion King
4. Tale as Old as Time – Beauty & the Beast
5. Under the Sea – Little Mermaid
6. Can You Feel the Love Tonight – Lion King
7. Reflections – Mulan
8. Colors of the Wind – Pocahontas
9. You’ll be in my Heart – Tarzan
10. Prince Ali – Aladdin
Yeah I’m pretty sure that Disney has a monopoly on my childhood. This reminds me. I must go download all of these songs to my iPod can sway with me. Just hope that I don’t bust out a rousing rendition of “Hakuna Matata” while commuting on the bus o_O. Also of note is that I have both versions of “A Whole New World” on my mp3 player. The movie version and the duet by Celine Dion and Peabo “Gumby” Bryson. I’m not ‘shamed.
So do you think my list rocks? Did I leave some essentials out (which I’m sure I am)? What’s your top 5 Disney soundtracks of all time?

“study in haters” lol
Under the sea is number 1 for me. It is funny because Little Mermaid was my favorite disney movie and I could not understand a word Sebastian was saying.
“Teenagers dey tink dey know everything. You give dem an inch…dey swim all over you.”
I also like the spell song from the movie “Bed Knobs and Broomstick.” Those armored men were gettin’ it in that movie.
Sebastian the Jamaican crab was half the reason Little Mermaid was so great. LOLLL! “De Seaweed is always greenah, in somebudee else’s lake…”
Night and the spirit of life calling, Oh, oh, iyo mamela oh, oh, iyo
And the voice with the fear of a child answers, Oh, oh, iyo iyo mamela
Wait! there’s no mountain too great. Hear these words and have faith, Oh, oh, iyo
Have faith,Hela hey mamela, hela hey mamela
Hela hey mamela, hela hey mamela
He lives in you, he lives in me (hela hey mamela)
He watches over everything we see,Into the waters, into the truth. In your reflection, he lives in you
“Oh, oh, iyo mamela oh, oh, iyo”
*cackles* WHY is that what you think they said? And WHY did I laugh loudly at that? LMAO!!!
The Lion King always and forever. It was even the theme to my 4th grade graduation. We sang the Circle of Life and the students’ speeches had the circle of life as the theme. Plus the musical ups the awesomeness of the movie by 100.
There’s a special place in my heart for everything about the Little Mermaid though because my favorite color is red and I wanted red hair just like Ariel which is the color red you find in the crayon box. I was so disappointed when I met natural born redheads because their hair wasn’t really red to me.
And I can’t leave out the music of Aladdin. Yeah all I had was a Disney childhood too.
You had 4th grade graduation? Never heard of that. Interesting…
But YESSSS @ Ariel being #AllRedEverything. She was so pretty. Don’t most redheads have freckles too? Or is that stupidity on my part?
how did you forget the wonderfulness that is Timon and Pumbaa’s diversion song? lol
And I need you to pay rent to live in my head.
lol.
“Are you achin”
Yes yep yep
“For some bacon?”
Yep yep yep
“He’s a big pig!”
Yep yep yep
“You could be a big pig too…OY!”
PAY rent??? Naw son! I just make a camp site in ur cranium. I’m a thug like that.
Circle of Life is that ish! Disney had a GREAT soundtrack run there in the 90s. I would have to throw “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid into my top 10. That scene was so romantical to me in the movie. Dammit Prince just kiss her!!!
P.S. I really thought the little warthog would appreciate my serenade. But, alas, he scurried before I got to the bridge. I momentarily considered singing “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” to a lion, but then I realized if he didn’t enjoy it that it would probably end badly for me.
“Kiss The Girl” built up all this suspense. And they were in a canoe all romantic-like. Why ain’t nobody ever taken me on a boat ride in a lagoon? Oh I can’t swim? Aight then…
I’m CRACKING up at visual of you tryna serenade a warthog and him being like “O____o”
You pretty much hit the nail on the head; Disney was my childhood. I was 8 when The Lion Kang came out and I was headfirst in that theater! HEAD FIRST! Crying over Mufasa (“Mufasa!” “Oooh, say it again! Mufasa, Mufasa, Mufasa!!!”) like the 8-yr-old softie I was.
However, The Little Mermaid (TLM) is who iStan for.
Disney and I are like >this<. Matter fact, my iPod has some of its greatest hits: the theme from Sleeping Beauty "Once Upon A Dream," Ursula's (TLM) "Poor Unfortunate Souls" Mulan's "Be A Man," The Genie's, "Never Had a Friend," Cinderella's "So This Is Love," and "Sing Sweet Nightengale" and TLM's "Part of Your World" are heavy, heavy rotations in my iPeezy.
I have every VHS made by Disney ever. I was shunning the DVDs, but now I have to get those as well. 🙁 RIP tapes. RIP.
PS: I used to sing The Dwarf's "Heigh Ho (Off to Work We Go)" around the house, just because it had the word 'ho' in it.
I have the tapes also!! The DVDs (“released from the Disney Vault!!!”) are better because they are usually restored, have extra footage, etc. I’m the geek who watches the Behind the Scenes specials on all the Disney DVDs.
I need the ENTAH Disney Collection on DVD! I used to have some stuff on tape too but alas… VHS went out w/ the walkman…
I am having a ball downloading Disney soundtracks! Thanks! This is so much better than that “Pretty Person Swag” stuff that is on the radio right now.
You’s welcome!
OMG! The Lion King is prob my fav disney soundtrack of all time..BUT..I wont lie..this Princess and the Frog soundtrack wasnt too damn shabby! That “Im almost there” got me in tears (dont ask why! )
yes you are so right since the princess and the frog is one of the newer Disney films people sleep on the soundtrack
YAS! You just slayed it. Disney giveth me LIFE! Slayed my thug right thuurrrr.
But you did forget Kiss the Girl – Little Mermaid.
gets me eer time
I mentioned “Kiss The Girl” but it just didn’t make it into my Top 10.
I just spent last Friday downloading a bunch of Disney songs. I made a CD just to play at Blockbuster while working, and I can’t tell you how amped I got when “Gaston” came on.
YESSS @ your Disney mixtape. lol
Yer Mostest Wonderful Awesomelynessis,
Awwwwwww!
To steal the phrase “Ya just gave me Life!” with this post-up (Luvvie in the Middle, Postin’ Up the thugs on the court! LOL!!!).
I was all prepared for another crappy-too-busy-can’t people make their Own decisions ever-day starin’ out the office window in the Captivity of my White Privileged career and …
You do THIS!!!
LIFE!!!!!!!
‘Cause you made me cry. Really. Because it brought back SO many excellent memories of wonderful moments and time with my most cherished, beloved Suburban Rats (we don’t live anywhere near the ‘hood, ok? They’d never Qualify for their “Hood Card”).
I spent countless hours watching all those movies with them. Over. And over. And over …
When Ursula would do the “Body Language” thing, we’d all jump up, the kiddies and me, and Act It Out, lol! Shoulda seen my little girls swing the hips and body-roll, LOL!
The day my youngest is watchin’ Pocahontas, fer the 1,000 time, looks over at me cookin’ away (Rice. Yes. Rice.) in the kitchen and says “Daddy? This is a Interracial love story isn’t it? Like you!” Tears in Daddy’s lonely eyes …
Hakuna Matata is the families Theme Song. More like our Mantra –
“It means no worries for the rest of your days
It’s our problem-free philosophy”
How I so wish it could be true for their lives …
And yours too Awesomely Luvvie and all yer great reader’s.
Thanks for doing this. Really. To be reminded WHY I hold it together. For them. For the fact they’ve been worth it all.
“Daddy? This is a Interracial love story isn’t it? Like you!”
*Thug MURKED* This post was my pleasure! Took me back to the simpler times while tryna run the rat race. I appreciate your words! 😀
A Whole New World was not Celine Dion it was Regina King!!!!
It was actually Regina Belle.
Chile there’ve been so many covers of “Tale as old as time.” Trust I know my Celine Dion music. One of them is with her.
That was actually Celine’s introduction to America as a singer, with the great Peabo Bryson.
*nods*
A Google search confirmed that there was actually a cover by Celine & Peabo as well as Peabo & Regina. 🙂
Google always comes through as my “more people”
Oh man, I thought she did “Beauty and the Beast”…because, if not, I’ve been singing it in a Celine Dion voice for a while now and that should probably change. Okay…googling it…YES, good. That’s settled.
Also, I haven’t gone much further in the comments, but other than those listed above…”Bare Necessities” and “I Wanna Be Like You” (despite the interesting racial implications of the last one) are two of my faves.
Oh…and “Sister Suffragette” and “Supercalifragilisticsexpialidocious” (And anything that Julie Andrews sings, really) also make me very happy. Very very happy. And taught me great vocabulary as a kid…suffragette, precocious, subservient…
Awesome.
Okay – I see now that you were not saying “A Whole New World” was Celine Dion, but “Tale As Old As Time”, so I feel a little silly for being previously confused…
Although, that’s nothing to match the confusion I had when I thought someone had seconded the assertion that Reginia King sang the song. I’m tryin’ to imagine Huey and Riley singin’ anything from the Disney Folio and it ain’t happenin’.
Huey & Riley WATCHING Disney is even hard to imagine. Let alone singing along lol
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove me some Disney music. But from Pocahantas on, it has seriously fallen off.
One of my favorite songs it “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat, wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete? Wouldn’t you think I’m the girl, the girl who has everything [thug = murked]
YESSSSS!!! “part of your world” IS dope! And yes, Disney doesn’t make music like they used to. They need to bring back all them 90s folks.
As a Disney nut, this post spoke to me. Like, directly in my ear!
The Lion King has to take the crown for my favorite Disney movie ever. I knew that mofo, word-from-word from beginning to end. I’m sure I still do! I used to perform the entire movie as it was playing…as each character. Good times. “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” is my favorite!
Oh, and “Part of Your World”? Girrrrl. Ariel has THEE most beautiful Disney voice, period. That song was PERFECT. I remember when I worked as an Assistant Director for a theatre company, about 65% of the girls who auditioned sung this song. It is one of the top choices because if you can sing this song well? You can sang! Period.
OMG, I want to take an entire day off of work just looking at Disney movies because of this post. *faints with glee*
LAHN KANG is a classic! It will always be great. Ariel’s voice WAS amazing though. Sheesh. Whoever did her voice is gifted. And LOL @ u taking a sick day to indulge on Disney. I support it though.
The great Jodi Benson, was the singing voice of Ariel.
“You want thingamabobs? I’ve got twenty. But who cares? No big deal, I want moooorrrreeeeee.”
Luvvie, I can’t with you. Not today, maam. You pretty much know you ain’t shit, right?
I LOVE “Circle Of Life”! I ain’t shit ether!
I’m aware I ain’t on nuffin often lol.
I should be asleep, but noooo, I’m still listening to these dang show tunes on YouTube. Remember Oliver and Company? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3xafme2PWA
That damb dog w/ the half bitten ear. LOL
lord if i dont love me some uncle elton and ‘circle of life’ lion king IS the best disney film and soundtrack period. whenever, is it just me or when you hear’he lives in you’ can you literally see the spirits of african kings arisng from the ground?…….. ok just me then. great post
“Can you literally see the spirits of african kings arising from the ground?…….. ok just me then.”
If I see nay spirits arise from any ground, I’m running and hollering. African kings or otherwise.
Luvvie…this is classic. LOL.
“I just can’t wait to be King” was perfectly flashy like a true African… He might as well have said “Wipe me Down.” YOU SEE HIM and he KNEW you saw him.” TOO TRUE.
My roommate contemplated getting a tattoo that read, “Hakuna Matata.” I may or may not have fully encouraged such a decision.
Ya know, I’m not against a “Hakuna Matata” tattoo either. More of us need to live w/ that philosophy in mind anyway.
Ummmmmm, how could ya’ll forget the awesomeness that was The Jungle Book soundtrack? Especially Bare Neccessities and Walk Like You.
Disney is just too awesome! If I listed everything, this post would be longer than the Old Testament.
You can’t ride a bike? Are you serious? All you do is get on it and pedal. Whats not to know?
lawdt i am late to this party, but the muse for ursula was divine! watch hairspray and then tell me i’m wrong.
I think we may have been separated at birth, luvvie! I owned the lion king soundtrack on cassette before I got a chance to see the movie when it first released in theaters! (and I will definitely be seeing it in 3d next weekend when it re-releases. u?)
the only gripe I’ve ever had was simba’s singing voice on “morning report” not matching.
and I just *knew*me and ariel were singing twins… I have disney movie songs in my media players… lol
Lahn Kang is even better in 3d. And yes, my daughter and I sang along to all the songs.. lol

I know I’m late, but I love The Jungle Book! King Louis’ “I be like you” I love that song,, and still know all the words!!
I am 4 years late but yasssssssss I totally agree wuth this message. And Lion King on Broadway, especially the soundtrack, will change your life. I literally tear up (ok cry) on the circle of life live version. Best thing Disney ever did was give us The Lion King.
Greetings! This is my first visit to your blog!
Your blog provided us useful information to work on.
You have done a wonderful job!
