Being Mary Jane is Back Tonight with Season 3 and I’ll Be Watching!
I was at the first screening of the Being Mary Jane movie, 2 years ago in Chicago. Mara Brock Akil, creator and Executive Producer was there answering questions and showing love, and I was excited to be in the room to see what her latest project was about. Mara is writing bae, and her track record is so impressive that Usain Bolt is jealous (Girlfriends, The Game). LOVE SHE.

Gabrielle Union as Mary Jane Paul did not disappoint and it went beyond the movie to become a series on BET. There have been 2 seasons so far (that you can binge-watch on NetFlix), and tonight is the start of season 3.
Mary Jane Paul’s bad ass dress game, shenanigans and self-sabotage is back. The talk news show host can be such team bad decisions and some of us see ourselves in her or have a friend who isn’t too dissimilar. Although, the way she talks to her friends sometimes… me and her would NOT be able to get weekly lunches. However, she is allowed to be a fully formed woman, making mistakes, making amends and making men whimper at her feet. That part is my favorite. Still, Happily Ever After eludes her. Even as she is a professional powerhouse.
I love what MJ represents as a character, and a Black woman who feels free, has agency over her body and can be sexual without being stigmatized.
Mary Jane constantly says the wrong things, she pushes those around her to their limits and she’s so indecisive that the one thing she’s sure about is that she isn’t sure what she really wants. She went from David (Stephen Bishop) to Sheldon (Gary Dourdan), the older guy who offered very little of himself but freedom. In between, she’s bounced between conquests (heyyy Thomas Q. Jones).
I just want her and David to stop playing musical chairs with my their heart. They complicate everything. If after 5 years, you always end up back in each others’ arms, maybe that is the universe saying you belong together and you gotta stop playing bald-headed games! Also, the man can WEARRRR some boxer briefs! On the strength of that alone, she gotta come on.

So last we left, David butt-dialed Mary Jane as he was having an argument with forever friend-zoned Lisa, and MJ hears all the details and tea of their relationship. Lisa gave David $50,000 to start his company and she’s been an ever-present shoulder to cry on for him, and an occasional recipient of some cunning tongue game from him. MJ is in her car driving home in the rain as this is happening and she is stunned by what she’s overhearing. She narrowly misses hitting a car, but that car swerves off the road into a pole and her car swerves into a giant truck. David and Lisa hear all this go down.
Mary Jane JUST got promoted to primetime anchorwoman too, so this could not happen at a worst time.
SONNNNN. I cannot wait to see what happens next tonight. LAWDT, let MJ pull through with her face and weave intact.
