I’ve Been Watching “Married At First Sight” and I’m Totally Into It

A couple of weeks ago, someone tweeted me to check out the new TV show “Married at First Sight.” It’s airing on the networked formerly known as A&E (now FYI). Finally, I bingewatched the first four episodes on Hulu Plus and I kinda fell in love with the show.

Married At First Sight

A team of experts match up singles who are ready to be committed with a life partner. Except, the first time the partners meet, talk to each other or even hear each others’ names is at the altar. They blindly marry this person who was chosen as a perfect scientific match, based on an extensive questionnaire they had to fill out and the therapist interviewing each of them.

The (extreme) arranged marriage can be annulled at the end of the show, after the couples spend 5 weeks living together in wedded bliss or chaos.

Crazy, I know. But hey, 72-day marriages that are supposedly real exist soooo why not this kind? The social experiment is fascinating because we see these strangers get to know each other in the most forced and awkward situation. Will they make the best of it or will it be a complete disaster?

In the first episode, we meet the experts (sexologist, spiritualist, psychologist and sociologist) and the people who are up to be coupled. It was cute how they acted like they weren’t going to match the Black man and woman (Vaughn and Monet) together. Super adorable. Then there’s Jamie/Doug, and Jason/Cortney.

Married at First Sight Couples

Jason/Cortney — Monet/Vaughn — Jamie/Doug

When Jamie walks down the aisle to her husband to be (Doug), she is basically horrified because she isn’t attracted to him at all. After she begrudgingly mumbles “I do” and the ceremony ends, she *wall slides* and weeps because she thinks he’s ugmo. Jason/Cortney actually kiss after saying “I Do” and they have instant chemistry. Monet almost has a panic attack just because the magnitude of what she’s doing hits her but Vaughn takes it in stride and is a perfect gentleman.

Episodes 1 and 2 are all about the lead up to the wedding. We get to know the couples, their home lives and why they’re doing this. And then we watch the ceremonies and the receptions. It ends at the point where they end up alone for the first time ever, heading to their hotel rooms for their first nights as a married couple.

On the first night, Vaughn/Monet ended up making the sex, Jason/Cortney made out but no sex and Jamie/Doug didn’t even kiss. In fact, she told him not to touch her.

Jamie Married at First Sight

Jamie’s Post-Wedding *wall slide*

On the honeymoon, Vaughn/Monet struggle to make a connection and have their first argument when Vaughn tells Monet that she isn’t paying enough attention to him. Jason/Cortney make the secks continue to get closer. However, Jamie/Doug, who started out not even touching because Jamie was weirded out by everything (and Doug) got all emotionally intimate and close. By the end of it, they were going to sleep cuddling and they finally kissed and were being super affectionate! AAAAWWWWWW!!! The difference 4 days makes.

After the honeymoon, the couples have to talk finances and moving in together. Vaughn moves from south Jersey to Harlem, into Monet’s apartment. Monet doesn’t drive and her job is in Manhattan so moving to Jersey would be incredibly hard logistically. Doug moves out his parents house (that he moved into the year before when he got laid off) and into a new apartment that him and Jamie pick. Cortney and Jason move to a new place too, by the Brooklyn Bridge. Both of them needed to move because Cortney was living with a roommate, and her bedroom was their living room. Jason was living with his mom, who he is taking care of because she has stage 4 lung cancer.

Cortney Jason

Cortney and Jason apartment hunting

At the end of episode 4, all the couples are settling in. BUT Vaughn and Monet get into an argument when Vaughn tells Monet he wants peace and quiet and she talks too much. He was acting like a bit of a jerk.

I really hope they all make it and decide to stay married. The hopeful romantic in me is rooting for all of them. I feel all invested in their relationships. Jason and Cortney are the cutest to me. Jason is completely adorable and he’s an EMT who’s training to be a firefighter. Doug and Jamie have come the furthest and she really likes him now. Vaughn and Monet? Well… I don’t know if they’re gon make it. There’s already so much conflict there. Lawd.

I’ll keep watching to find out.

Oh and one more thing. Vaughn looks like DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gabba Gabba. Anyone else notice that? I keep picturing him in an orange skintight jumpsuit.

VaughnDJLance

You know I’m right.

That reminds me. I owe y’all a recap of Orange is the New Black season 2.

Anywho, is anyone else watching this show? What are your thoughts? Do you think any of the couples will stay together?

I love this show it’s definitely an interesting concept. I think Jamie & Doug and Jason & Courtney are going to make it. Vaughn is coming off like such a jerk. I couldn’t deal with him. Oh and FYI used to be the biography channel.

I completely agree. Vaughn rubs me the wrong way. He annoyed the stew out of me in the last episode when Monet was attempting to have a conversation with him after he moved in.

He’s an ass. But I’m sure he’ll claim that she is the one being difficult. That is what guys like that do.

I have been silently stanning for this show since it came on!! I am glad to know I’m not the onliest one who thinks Vaughn is a jerk!! Monet is trying so doggone hard and he is just like meh… I also love Doug he too is trying so hard and I’m glad Jamie is finally coming around. Hopefully they will make the secks too soon.

The casting special made me nervous. Some of those people were a little creepy but I guess you’d have to be a little creepy to agree to do something like this. They said these marriages are fully binding and they can’t be annulled. These couples will actually have to get a divorce if they decide not to stay together. Yikes!

Now I’m not gonna get that Yo Gabba Gabba orange jumpsuit out of my mind when I see nutty Vaughn! LOL I too am loving this show! This AND B.O.R.N. to Style right after it.

Thx for the heads up on this being the old Biography Channel, Dominique! I was like where in the he’ll did this new channel come from in my cable lineup!? LOL

I don’t think Monet & Vaughn are going to make it if they continue on this poor communication path. He’s seems controlling and set in his ways…and she doesn’t seem to be the type to jump through a lot of his misdirecting hoops. I had high hopes in the beginning…but now I think the Doug-Jaime couple is going the one to make it (with the bride who was so instantly not attracted to the groom, but is now feeeeeeeling him lol). I think time apart due to work is gonna be the killer for Burlesque dancer Cortney & firefighter/wrestler Jason. 🙂

Clearly I’ve been totally invested in this show…from episode one!! I’d love you to do weekly write-ups on this show, Luvvie! Pleeeeaaaase! 😉

I love this show,I think Vaughn lost interest after they had sex the first night..he doesn’t look at her like his wife. I was literally in tears laughing at Jamie’s facial expressions when she walked down the aisle, her thoughts were written all over her face…but Doug seems like a sweetheart,I hope they make it. Jason and Courtney are both sweethearts, I think they will make it. Monet needs to lock up the cookie jar and focus more on getting to know Vaughn and seeing if they really have anything real in common, not just the good sex.

    • RavenJ
      August 4, 2014 at 9:54 am

Yes!!! I also think Vaughn lost interest when they slept together the night of their wedding/the day they met. I’m not shaming Monet for that decision, but the minute I saw where their relationship was going something told me he would treat her like it was a first date instead of their wedding night. I guess that was part of the problem…it was both. I had my hubby watch it with me and he summed it up in a few words: “Dude needs his bitch-ass-ness cured”

I love Jason and Cortney. I don’t think Monet and Vaugh are gonna make it. The first three episodes I wanted to karate chop Jamie in the throat. I think Doug is very sweet and I now want his marriage to work.

Yes, I was like Jamie is being so rude to him and he and his family seem so nice and supportive. Then I read some where online that Jamie has been in two previous reality shows including bachelor Canada, and now I’m wondering if she’s really all in for real.

I really like this show, and I didn’t expect it. The hopeless romantic in me wants all of them to make it.

Vaughn/Monet: they are spending too much time having sex and not enough time getting to know each other. He needs to chill out and Monet needs to listen.

Jason/Courtney: they are establishing a relationship at a good pace and taking the time to get to know each other. Their downfall will be their work schedules.

Doug/Jamie: Love how Doug used his personality to win her over, which is what she needed. He gave her the space to warm up to him. They are super adorable and I hope she really opens up to him and gives him a chance.

I watch and adore this show as well. I actually think Vaughn has a point. Monet comes on too strong. She needs to learn how to lay her burdens down. No man worth anything is gonna take her isht. He already moved for her. She needs to check her mouth.

    • TheMrs
      August 3, 2014 at 11:06 am

I agree. I think Monet comes on too strong. Like when he said he wasn’t comfortable going to brunch with her friends yet. He says he would go ‘ in time’. She kept harping on it though and got in her feelings. However, he comes off as someone who wanted a wife who was going to just sit quietly and bake him cookies ( or give him the cookie) on demand. I think they have great sexual chemistry but are not compatible.
I was SO annoyed with Jamie at first but love how her and Doug’s relationship is progressing. Glad she gave him a chance.
The dancer and the firefighter are SUPER cute and would have the cutest babies lol. I hope they make it.

Vaughn. Oh, Vaughn. Vaughn wants to be absolute muh-fuggin KING so badly that when he doesn’t get his way he cries and instantly becomes the Queen. This is why dude was single. Other wen took a peek inside of that Pandora’s box and instantly fell out like the cat on the leash. NOPE. I watched the interviews and such and I was like “awwww, why Vaughn no have a wiiiiiife awweddyyyy.” Now I see. Vaughn has a multiplicity of jerky personalities waiting for opportunities to reign supreme. He can stick his Burger King crown where the sun don’t shine. Me no likey Mee-stah Vaughn.

So I’m stanning for this show so hard that I keep trying to find more info cause the eps aren’t coming fast enough!
I have the sads that Vaughn is super jerky. He would get on my reserve nerve.
I love that Doug and Jamie are giving it the college try to really know each other. I could see them staying together if one of them doesn’t screw it up.
Cortney and Jason are clearly the most compatible. If they woulda met on the street, they woulda got together. I think they’ll work out the schedule thing. I hope that’s not their downfall.

I was a bit apprehensive about this show at first. I think Doug is sweet and glad his wife is giving him a chance. Jason and his wife of think are the most compatible. Vaughan and Monet I think are the ones that won’t make it. I was rooting for them too. Don’t think Monet should’ve put out on the wedding night.

Like most everyone else here, I’m soooo relieved to know I haven’t been the only one watching or the only one fed up with Vaughn’s jackassery. He’s so busy berating Monet one moment, because she’s not climbing him like Everest, and then in the next moment, he’s treating her like an intruder in her own damned home. How about a valium and a big cup of shut-the-hell-up, Sybil, I mean Vaughn??? Boy’s clearly got some serious shooz! Monet should’ve just cut the net on the catamaran and called it a wrap. And although I think Jason aka The Body is absolutely adorable (you know Cortney’s still pinching herself), why does he always look like he’s wearing pink gloss on his upper lip? As for Doug, did anyone see the fake post he made pretending his moles had been removed? If only! Don’t get me wrong, he should definitely be commended for his patience with Jamie, but those moles…all of them! Zoinks! Anyways, I’m hoping 2 out of the 3 marriages work out and that Monet drop-kicks evil Urkel back to Jersey.

Oh my goodness! I was just talking to a friend about how much I love this show!!!! It’s amazing and I even got my bestie hooked. I have a mini-crush on Jason ’cause he’s got a nice bawdy, and on Doug because he is the sweetest guy that ever lived. I was hating so hard on Jamie for how she was acting (I mean, you didn’t know it might be uncomfortable marrying a total stranger, Ma’am? Get outta here.) I’m glad she’s come around, though. She is feeling Doug super-hard now and it’s really sweet. As for Vaughn, I’m over him and his wishy-washy attitude. First he wants attention, and then he says she is talking too much when she tries to interact with him. So how is she supposed to pay you the attention? Through pantomime? Chile, please. (Mind you, as a woman married to a man I’ve dubbed “Sir Talksalot,” I understand wanting some silence, but dang. Be consistent, dude.) Overall though, lovelovelove this show. I am tuned in and ready to see what else happens. With this and Born to Style, I am a happy girl.

Oh, and btw, I absolutely cannot stand you for the DJ Lance Rock thing. This whole time I’ve been wondering why Vaughn looks so familiar to me, and now I know. I hate you for that. *hollers all over everything in a 6ft radius* Hysterical!

I’m esscciiittteeed b/c it’s tuesday night and time for this show… it is def one of my faves. And unlike most people here who dislike Vaughn, I think I dislike Monet more. She is too “independent woman, hear me roar” with him at first. And now he’s kind of putting the walls back up to protect himself though she calls herself dropping hers. It’s a timing issue.

Anywho, I LOVE LOVE Jason + his boo. And I was also peev’ed at how Jamie was acting b/c she expected Doug to be an Abercrombie model eeem though she ain’t one. Will be tuning in tonight…

Just watched the latest episode, and I’m wondering: Why would you take someone who you “think” has trust issues and ask her how you feel about menage a trois (sp) in the first 14 days of marriage? How was that NOT supposed to sound like, “I’m bored already, let’s spice it up with the next chick who’s not boring at all”? Vaughn isn’t half as bright as he thinks he is. Whatever Monet’s faults are (i.e., trying to hard), I don’t think Vaughn is ready for marriage to ANYONE.

    August 8, 2014 at 7:07 am

So after reading this recap (and the comments), my sister and I binge-watched this last night. I was ‘on-ready’ to not like Vaughn but after watching all of the episodes I really think that their problem is they can’t read each other (b/c obviously they don’t know each other). Monet can’t read his non-verbal cues about when he wants to engage more vs. when he wants a little quiet time. I think the difference is Monet is just very verbal about her confusion and he just wants her to magically figure it out.

I was also expecting Doug to look like a real-life Shrek but I didn’t think he looked bad at all…I think his personality was a clincher for me. Doug wore Jamie all the way down then hit her with the neck kiss on their friendship vacay. I immediately said to my sister, Doug is a nice guy with a little pimp in him b/c he laid that good guy game down FLAWLESSLY…and wrapped it with that neck kiss that pushed her into full ‘I like you’ status #GAME.

Courtney and Jason are just too cute for words. Had I not been watching and just saw them on the street, I would think they just met out-and-about and got together…they had an instant chemistry (which ironically enough is what Vaughn was looking for). I love this show….my sister wants me to sign her up for season 2.

What got me is that Vaughn and Monet were NOT even considering moving from their place. The other couples did it right in finding a place together and finding a place where they could grow! They truly compromised and found a place in the where each did not have to make long journeys for work! That is how it is supposed to be. I don’t get why that is so hard for Vaughn and Monet. but on the other hand, I can understand why Monet wouldn’t want to move with the way Vaughn is acting.

  34. Candycane
    August 9, 2014 at 3:54 pm

I am really embarrassed for the black couple Vaughn and Monet. They are educated and professional and portray/have a negative relationship. I think Monet should drop Mr. V and apply to be the next “bachelorette” and have a variety of men to choose from. Old saying, “drop that zero and get a hero”.

Vaughn is a total jerk. It is like he wants Monet to be his jump off when he wants sex, and his cook when he wants to eat and then he just wants her to just leave him alone. Everytime I see him with Monet, he just comes across as a guy who wants to control her and give nothing back. The show is really intriguing.

I think Vaughn is a good man. He gave up his comfortable home for Monet’s convenience. He think of things that involves them both. Monet, on the other hand make plans with her friends who will be there after this experiment. I can understand that Vaughn wants to just relax on Sunday to prepare for the work week. I don’t think Vaughn is an irresponsible person, considering he works everyday and is in the reserve. That is a man because he takes care of himself, he is responsible, and there are things in place through the military that benefits his future. He may not be rich but he is thoughtful and is worker. He is trying to be more of a husband than she is a wife. He should come first not her friends because she is married. I hope it works out for them.

And that Lance Rock pic! LMAO! OMG YES! So true!

    August 24, 2014 at 3:30 pm

I, too, am obsessed with this show! When I heard what it was about I knew, immediately, that it was a “must watch”.

I hated Jaime in the beginning and even though she’s gotten better, I’m still not 100% sure about her. She’s a bit self centered in my opinion. I think Doug has handled the whole situation with an open mind and really wants it to work. For some reason I think after the 5 weeks is up they will not stay together but I hope I’m wrong.

I love Cortney and Jason and want them to work but I think after last episode when he was so reluctant for her to meet his Mom, it seemed a bit immature of him and I’m not sure he’s ready to share a life with someone.

Now…..Vaughn and Monet………chile…..no! Vaughn irritates the hell out of me and I think he’s rude and a mama’s boy. He has no idea of how to talk to a woman and needs to work on his communication skills without being hurtful. The only thing I agreed with him on is when he came home and she told him the girls were coming over. That could have waited. They really needed the time together and he seemed eager to see her and she totally blew him off.

I think they failed from the very beginning by having sex that first night. You have to at least get to know the person attached to the stranger peen. And leaving arguments unresolved and just sleeping together is a recipe for disaster. I don’t think they are going to work out in the end.

Overall, I love this show and I hope after this first experiment, there are more to come.

Vaughn is clearly gay. Everything about him screams homosexual. My bestie is apart of the community, and trust me he is gay. It is obvious that he is on the show for exposure. I guarantee you if a little digging was done, you will find some of his men out there

I have been searching for a blog that covers this show. I am obsessed since this is one of the only real reality shows. These couples journey is fascinating. Monet/Vaughn are not going to make it because they want different things from a partner than they provide. Jamie/Doug have an 80/20 shot. He entered into this sincerely looking for a wife. She entered into it for the attention and expected “the chiseled Bachelor” look in the man and got surprised by ” everyday man” instead. She’s shallow and he’s grounded. Courtney/Jason…did no one notice how much DEBT she is in? She’s got no skills except as a burlesque dancer. Run Jason Run!

Rooting for Doug and Jamie. Glad she seems to be coming around. Hope she is not using this to further her own career. Think Monet and Vaugn are a lost cause. They are both too self absorbed. Think Courtney and her man are trying very hard to make it. Think he is in denial about his mothers health. Hope they can all come out with what’s best for them.

I think Monet was the problem in that matchup. She is a non-giving passive-aggressive annoyance. Talk, talk, talk,,,about why Vaughn is short of perfect.. “you have so much potential” is NOT a compliment.

Vaughn wanted someone to be happy to see him, to make him feel like he is first in her world.

I am SO surprised at the number of Vaughn haters on this blog.

Are you kidding me? Vaughn is a great guy. I too am shocked at how many people have sided with Monet (they must be her friends). Anyone with a brain could see that she is such a nagging, passive aggressive bitch who likes to play innocent. Like when she made plans to have people over when Vaughn had been gone for a few days. Monet criticized Vaughn for everything he said and did. He compromised so much more than she did. The guy could not win. Although it was immature, Vaughn was just playing and knew he would piss her off when he suggested a threesome. Monet needs some weak ass guy that she can boss around. It’s so obvious why she’s single.

I so agree! I don’t think Vaughn is a bad guy at all. Monet may have a bubbly personality, but she’s hard as nails. No one wants a person telling them what’s wrong with them. She has no idea how to relate to a man. Very self-centered and caught up in the “I am woman…hear me roar” mode. (and I’m a woman). Vaughn wanted someone who was happy to see him, who wanted to please him with an occasional home cooked meal, someone who would spend time with him just chilling. If she had done that, I bet Vaughn would have given her back more than 100%.

Vaughn asked his wife of 2 weeks for a threesome….#MendItMessiah, then said he expected her to cook, did his hands not join the union too? How are you going to tell someone that they’re annoying because they’re upbeat. Even Mortimer Adams had a better personality than this dude.Vaughn was too critical & very unwilling to compromise.

I LOVE this show, but would like to know if these couples are actor or “real” people who do meet at the altar for the first time and then try it for 6 weeks of wedded bliss? If they are not a good match they can get a divorce…Please let me know real SOON. Thanks bunches,
