My Life

Wood Splinter 1, Luvvie 0

I am currently limping around these parts because I got punked out by a wood splinter last night. I was minding my own business when I took a step and a sharp pain went through my left foot. After my reflex yelled out the loudest “F&VK” ever, I looked at my foot, and there was a small piece of wood just chilling in it. I still had on my sweater tights and socks, so I took those off and looked at my foot. No blood, but there was still a piece of wood under my skin, yet I could not see any opening. That damn magical splinter.

After a process of using a safety pin and cuticle remover to extract this piece of wood, I am now limping. Not sure if there is still a piece left in or if its from the soreness of breaking my skin to get it out. But when I put my foot down, it pricks. Imagine had I not had on them sweater tights and socks. I’d be a really hurting fool if it had gone deeper.

Either way, I got punked by a wood splinter.

Sidenote: Why is it that the smallest injuries tend to hurt the most at times? Like papercuts. Papercuts can make grown folks cry. Or when you hit your funny bone. Ain’t sh*t funny about it as you try to say to yourself “I ain’t gon be no b*tch!”

Edit: So apparently, I’m supposed to have wrapped it up and put some Neosporin on it to prevent infection. I didn’t do nothing of the sort. I hope my foot don’t fall off! Medications and hospitals are scary @ me!

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Lil things hurt the worse because God likes to humble us and allow us to remember that even in all our great inflated ego greatness we are still just big ole’ crybabies! Just a mass of nerves and sensitivity!

The ultimate pain is a stubbed toe! It hurts sooo bad that you wanna curse somebody out, but it’s all your own fault so you end up limping crying like bizzle and cursing your own self out! My eyes and ish water at the thought.

About 9 years ago, I got a large piece of wood in my foot. Some people consider that just a splinter…Wrong.

There were 2 pieces sticking out of my foot with blood dripping out onto the floor and all over my foot.

One of the pieces was removed by tweezers. The other was too tight and deep.

    To the hospital I went…

The doctor said to never pull out a wood splinter by anyone other than a doctor since the wood "fish hooks" when you pull it out in the opposite direction it entered.

As for the remaining piece… Local Anesthesia (which didn't work since the wood blocks the tissue from absorbing it.) So I felt everything. She cut a small incision into the already-made puncture wound from the wood/splinter.

She took the forceps and dug in and pulled it out. Lots of Pain.

However, I could still feel some wood in there. She stuck the forceps back in and probed around…she could feel the wood in there, too. But it was too deep to remove.

It would either come out on its own OR Surgery. Since the hospital I was at was known as "Poor Man's Hospital" there was no MRI Machine. She had to take an XRay, although she explained that there was no way the wood would show up on an Xray. Thus, they couldn't tell how big or how deep the wood was.

A Tetanus Shot and A Shot Of Penicillin. Also an RX of Antibiotics for the Anticipated Infection from this Foreign Body Lodged in my foot. Plus Vicodin for the Pain.

Next Day I limped with a cane. About 24 hours after the injury, a Blood Poisoning Infection developed and it was BURNING PAIN. Swollen, Red, and a Red Line. I kept taking the AntiBiotics and Vicodin, and by the next morning the Red Line diminished, but still burning infection.

Soaking in Epsom Salt & Warm H2O helped.

Back to Hospital: They said I should have gone to hospital when I got the Blood Poisoning. And that I was lucky I didn't die.

After seeing over 5 doctors, a Podiatrist removed a 1/4 inch of wood/splinter that was starting to surface after 3 months. Yet I was still limping and felt there was more wood inside. I was still being prescribed AntiBiotics and Vicodin.

I still wasn't granted an MRI as of yet. He felt the rest of the wood would come out on its own.

Finally after 5 months I talked the Doctor into giving me the MRI.

2 Pieces of Wood, 1 Inch and 1 1/2 inches were still in the foot although you couldn't see it with the human eye. But I could feel it.

I finally had my surgery and both pieces were removed.

I was told it would heal within 3 months. I was looking forward to getting my life back to normal.

Nope…3 months later…still felt like something in there. Possible there were small pieces left inside. No more infection. But foot going Red, Hot, Burning…Then sometimes Cold & Blue. Still couldn't walk or bend toes. Stabbing Pains, etc…

I was diagnosed with a nerve disorder from all the trauma and infections from the wood/splinter.

I am disabled permanently. 9 years.

Do me a favor…please go to the hospital and get an MRI if you think there is wood or ANY foreign body in your foot. For wood to show up in MRI, they may need to inject a contrast dye.)

Also, I met someone who got splinter in foot, but piece of sock entered into the foot during the piercing.

Good Luck. Be Brave. Get the wood out. I don't mean to scare you, but if you feel there is something in your foot, get to a doctor asap.

    PS:

Here is a link to a story I found on Google.

A man wrote the story about his young son’s ordeal with a 2 Inch Splinter in His Foot.
