The Children: Game of Thrones Season 4 Finale Recap

The season 4 finale of Game of Thrones wrapped up some of our questions and packed so much in one hour that I felt it was too rushed. But let’s talk about it.

Game_of_thrones

Mance and Peace – Jon walks by all the slayed Wildlings into the woods towards their camp, where Mance Rayder and the others are. They see him and he shows he isn’t carrying a weapon. The leader of the Wildlings invites him for a chat inside the tent and asks what he wants. Jon says he’s there to broker peace between the groups. The two chat and Jon tells him Ygritte is dead but he didn’t kill her. They drink a toast to her memory and to Mack the Mighty, the giant who entered the Wall.

Mance tells Jon that they aren’t trying to conquer the wall. They just want to be able to hide behind it because Winter is Coming. And he’s talmbout no one else will die if they open the gate. I’m not sure I believe him. He might need more people. All of a sudden, horns start blowing and Mance think it’s the men of the Night’s watch but Jon assures him that they don’t have the numbers to stage an attack.

A huge army comes in killing Wildlings left and right. When they get to Mance, their leader hops off a horse and take off his mask. It’s Stannis Baratheon. WUT? Yall know Stannis is sensitive about not getting any Iron Throne respect and Mance says they don’t kneel for kings beyond the wall. Stannis’ 2nd in Command sees Jon’s alphet and recognizes him as a Night’s Watch man and Jon introduces himself and says what he’s there for. He tells Stannis that his father died for him.

Stannis Honorable man

Baratheon asks what his father would do with Mance and Jon says the man had him as a prisoner once and could have killed him but didn’t. He says they should take him as a prisoner and question him, saving the Windling King’s life. He also suggests that all the dead be burned before nighttime. Because: White walkers.

Poisoned Mount – The Mount is unconscious on a table, with terrible wounds from the Viper’s sword. They’re festering because of the poison at the end of the dead man’s sword. WTF?!? What does his big ass need to die? LAWD! Maester Pycell tells Cersei nothing can be done but another docter there (Qybrun) says he can do something but if it works, it will change the Mount. Uh oh.

Lannister Legacy – Cersei heads to her father’s chamber and says she’s not marrying the Tyrell boy he’s betrothed her to. She isn’t trying to leave little Tommen to the sharks and as he tries to flick her off, she tells him “Your legacy is a lie.” She admits that the “rumors” about her and Jamie are true, leaving her father in a pool of denial he can’t even wade in anymore. She heads to Jamie and she tells him she “chooses” him and they start making out and I wanted to lose my lunch.

Jamie Cersei 1 Jamie Cersei 2

They are both THE WORST!

Judge Daenerys – Nowadays, all Daenerys does is sit on her throne and listen to complaints. This isn’t the Queendom she expects. An old man name Fennesz says he was one of the slaves she freed. “The young may rejoice in the new world you have built for them, but for those of us too old to change there is only fear and squalor.” He had purpose and status in the house he worked for and wants to go back. She says he can sign a 1-year contract with his old master. The Barrister tells her afterwards that the old masters will take advantage of this new leniency. He says “they will be slaves in every way but name alone.”

Next comes a man who is weeping and holding on to a brown blanket. He drops it and in it is the skeleton of his daughter, which fell from the sky, burnt. One of her bad ass dragons was craving human. The Khaleesi places 2 of her children (dragons) in chains in a cave. She can’t find the other one, who is probably the one who did it. The dragons cry after her and she cries as she closes the cave.

Chained Dragons

WHERE IS HER DRAGON?

Fallen Men – Aemon Targaryen gives the eulogy for the fallen Night’s Men before their burned as Baratheon, Melissandre and his people look on. Jon lights his men on fire and goes to see Turmond, the ginger wildling they kidnapped. They talk about Ygritte and Turmond says “Did you love her? She loved you. All she ever talked about was killing you. That’s how I know.” He then makes one request: that he lets Ygritte burn in the real North. Jon makes a special pyre for her in the woods and burns her body.  He even clumsily cries, the only emotion we’ve seen from him. Jon Snow, you know nothing… but love. Aawwww!

Hating Skeletons – Bran, Hodor, Jojen (the other boy with vision) and his sister Meera finally get North and they see the tree from Bran’s vision. As they get close, skeletal hands starts bursting through the snow and one grabs Jojen’s leg, pulling him down. They start coming out the snow in droves and the group is trying to fight them off but more keep coming. WTF?!?!?! Crazy mutant skeletons are a thing now too?!?

Skeletons 1 Skeletons 2

Bran sees Hodor is a bit slow on the uptake so he enters his body. Jojen is stabbed by one of the things and he tells Meera to go ahead. She slits his throat so he can die quickly.

The group is really about to lose when bombs start taking out the skeletons. A little girl tells them to come with her or they will lose all their lives. They run inside a cave with skeletons still following them but when the skeletons enter the cave, they automatically explode. The girl says “The power that moves them is powerless here.” Also, she’s not a little girl, but one of the Children of the Forest, who are actually older than alllll the humans that were ever in Westeros.

She leads them further into the cave and Bran sees the 3-eyed raven he’s been seeing in his dreams since he was little. The raven gets into a tree and turns into some old man with a beard. The man tells him he’s been watching them all, because he has 1,000 eyes. He says he’s gonna give him what he’s been looking for. “You’ll never walk again but you will fly.” WUT?

Hounding Tarth – Brienne of Tarth and Poderick are wondering where their horses are when Brienne sees a girl practicing her sword fight skills. They start chatting and the Hound shows up. Poderick recognizes him and she realizes the girl she’s been talking to is Arya Stark. She says she made a vow to her mother to bring her girls home but Hound says there is no home anymore because everyone is dead. Fact. Brienne wants Arya to come with her, thus kicking off an epic fight between her and the Hound. Hound Tarth Fight

It lasts for what seems to be forever, and finally Brienne kicks him off the side of a cliff and he rolls down. She asks Pod where Arya is and he doesn’t know. The girl is hiding behind a giant rock.

Arya goes to the Hound and he’s in terrible shape. He tells her he’s gonna die and she should find Brienne and go with her because that is how she will be protected. He also tells her to drive her needle through his heart so it can be done. The Hound tells her the story of how he killed her friend to make her really want to do it but our girl just steals his gold and walks away. WELP.

Free Tyrion – In the middle of the night, Jamie comes and free Tyrion from his cell. He tells him Varys is waiting for him in his room. He just has to go through a hatch. The bros hug it out because it might be the last time they see each other. Instead of heading straight to Varys, Tyrion takes a detour into Tywin Lannister’s room. There, he finds his love, Shae, all in the bed. THAT WHORE! These hoes really ain’t loyal. What? I had to do it. Heartbroken, he strangles her with a chain. Then he takes a crossbow and heads down the hall where he finds his father on the toilet, a non-iron throne.

Tyrion Lannister

They pissed my boo, Tyrion, off!

Tyrion points the crossbow at Tywin, who is still a smug bastard. “All my life you’ve wanted me dead.” “Yes but you refused to die. I respect that.” Papa Lannister then says he really wasn’t gonna allow Tyrion’s death sentence to be carried out. HE IS LYING LIKE A RUG! Lil Lannister says he loved Shae and his father calls her a whore. “Say that word again.” TYRION IS SICK AND TAHD OF TYWIN’S SHENANIGANS! He shoots his father with the crossbow and reloads it just to shoot him again. TYWIN’S DEAD! Happy Father’s Day!

He walks away and finally shows up to Varys’ room.

Varys puts Tyrion in a box and nails it shut. The box is placed on a ship and Varys goes with it.

Valar Morgulis – Arya is now a lone wolf and she goes to a port and sees a captain. She asks him to take her to the North and he says he’s not going there. He’s headed to Braavos. She hears this and hands him the iron coin that the Faceless assassin gave her. The one who helped her kill 3 people. He had told her that if she ever wants to find him and meets everyone from Braavos, to hand them the coin and say “Valar Morgulis” and they will help her.

Valar Morghulis gif

The captain tells her she will get a cabin and he will take her to Braavos. Arya Starks sails away from Westeros, to go goon up in Braavos.

And that’s all she wrote.

The death of Tywin Lannister is HUGE because he was the puppet master of a lot of Westeros’ madness. What happens now that the most powerful man in the kingdom is dead? Who will take his place? How will Cersei and Jamie handle this? Also, where will Varys and Tyrion end up? Since we didn’t see him die, could the Hound actually survive the asswhooping he got?

Even with Tyrion killing Tywin, this episode didn’t feel satisfying. It might be one of my least favorite of the entire series yet, actually.

So many questions and we will have to wait until Spring 2015 to find out. WOMPPPP!!!!

Anywho, discuss! Those of you who’ve read the #GameofThrones books. SHUT YOUR TRAPS ABOUT SPOILERS TO COME IF YOU’RE COMMENTING ON MY BLOG! Don’t make me fight you and block you from ever commenting here again. That is all. JUST DISCUSS THE SHOW UP TO THIS POINT! People have not paid attention to this in past weeks and it really makes me want to drop kick them in face.

I’ll be on Huffington Post Live today at 4pm ET talmbout the Game of Thrones finale.

Luvvie, I know you’re a busy woman and ery’thang but you should really read the books!! While the series is good..no, FREAKIN AWESOME, the books are, IMHO, a great deal better!! Plus, the series leaves out some important details and rearranges some events.

Anyhoo…can’t wait for next season but in the meantime I will finish reading Book #4 and start on #5! 😉

Cersei is going to be outta control now that poppa is dead. I TRULY want her to meet her end soon! Side note: the girl with Jojen wasn’t his guide – she’s his sister.

Yes! Thank you. It was his sister Meera. And everything happened so fast I couldn’t even process that she just had to kill her brother! 🙁

Yeah Meera is Jojen’s sister. That makes her leaving him all the more powerful.

I wouldn’t say that Tywin is dead. He should be, but we won’t know for sure until next season.

That dude doesn’t appear to be on that dies easily.

Next season is going to be a beast.

He’s dead. The bells you heard ringing as Tyrion and Varys escaped only ring when someone had confirmed a death in the royal court.

O.M.G. How I WISH that bow and arrow were meant for the demon sister Cersei!! Shae got all that she deserves, I could NEVER stand her a.ss. And it will be interesting to see how things fall with Tywin dead and gone.

Dany is losing control of her dragons and IMO losing control as Queen. She’s not making the best decisions with regard to the long term and that disappoints me cause I really want to see her win in life.

I for sure thought Arya and Sansa would finally meet up, looks like THAT’s never going to happen now. And I should know better, there’s never happy endings in the GoT.

The episode was informative, setting up a lot for the next season, but it still felt like it lacked a little panache for a season finale…or the directors just wanted to give us a break from heart palpitations.

Awwww, Daenarys had to put her lil’ gang banging ass dragons on lockdown. They outchea running amuck and wreaking havoc on the community. I guess she said she’s not going to be one of those mommas talm bout, “he was a good boy. He ain’t bother nobody” when everybody else knows otherwise.

      June 16, 2014 at 3:02 pm

What if she turns out to be Jon’s mom? They never actually said who his mother is. I think Dany is going to have to kill the big dragon and that hits me right in the feels…

Lyanna + Rheagar (sp?) = Jon Snow

        • TammyS
          June 16, 2014 at 6:52 pm

The conspiracy theory is that Jon is actually Eddard’s nephew and not his son. Lyanna was his sister and Rhaegar was the previous king, the one who Robert Baratheon killed, to assume the throne. So to protect his sister’s honour, Ned pretended that Jon was his bastard son. It is conjecture persons came up based on “clues” scattered throughout the book.

        • June 16, 2014 at 6:53 pm

SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You’ll just ignore the NO SPOILERS piece I put up top about not discussing the books? UGH!

          June 16, 2014 at 7:09 pm

its not a spoiler though. its not in the books. its a conspiracy theory based on knowing who lyanna stark was…. i.e. not the kind of woman to get “kidnapped”.

My theory is that Melisandre is Jon’s mother. That’s why she was eyeballing him all crazy.

  7. June 16, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Stannis is the real deal and very nearly took King’s Landing except for Tyrion’s efforts. It’s like he told Tywin, “I was always your son.” Except for his proclivity for whores and alcohol, he is the best of the Lannisters and never got any respect. Varys was the only one who understood Tyrion and apparently Jaime too, except he’s too busy hooking up with his twin sister. By the way, their scenes made me gag too. Watching Tyrion and Varys on the lam next season should be incredibly entertaining. Also, can we talk about Melisandre eyeing up Jon Snow. She’s so crazy but right about one thing – winter is coming and the rest of Westeros isn’t ready for it.

I really wanted papa Lannister to get shot a few more times, but I know it takes a lot to load up that crossbow. I was looking for more mayham and foolishness in the season finale though. But a friend pointed out that Tywin getting killed was like 50 kills in one since he was running everything.

      June 16, 2014 at 3:02 pm

Oops, I hit enter too soon. I need more info on Varys. What’s up with him? After he pulled the Henry Box Brown on Tyrion, was he planning to return home? After the bells started tolling, did he just decide “oh hell nawl” and copped a squat on the ship to anywhere else but here? Book readers, please explain.

      • Stephanie
        June 16, 2014 at 3:40 pm

Yeah, basically Varys was just like “i can’t” and left with Tyrion.

I’m disappointed with the finale, but ONLY because I thought that they would have included an extremely important and NUTS scene from the ending of the 4th book, but they didn’t and that gives me the sads.

          June 16, 2014 at 3:42 pm

If it’s what I think you’re talking about, yeah. That scene with her opening her eyes woulda laid everybody out, casket sharp. It needs to happen. I think it will next season. But they’re leaving a lot of stuff out of the series and pulling it out of order. So that might he ext seasons finale. I wouldn’t be surprised.

I cheered for the shitty daddy dying on the shitter. It was poetic justice. And Cersei will get her comeuppance. But she’s the eldest child so she’ll be in charge… or so she thinks.

LOL Ess. Varys was heading back to King’s Landing but, the tolling of the bells and Tyrion’s appearance (not to mention late arrival) told him that something major had happened. I’m guessing he knew he would be implicated and got ghost before his head would roll…

I’m not a book reader but yes, that’s exactly what happened. He was heading back home but as soon as he heard the bells, he did a smooth pirouette, started to power walk and got on the boat.
And that’s why he’s one of my favourite characters. He has survival instincts.

So I binged watched all 4 seasons of Game of Thrones and here’s how I sum it up Arya is every damn thing she is Bae (FYI I never use that term) she.is.a.goon. I mean a real fking G. She is currently all out of fks after learning her psycho aunt took a swan dive out the moon door and chucked up the deuces and sailed away to bravvos. I will always be here for her….Arya Stark FTW.

I LOVE TYRION THAT IS ALL. Cersei has gotta die soon and violently and take the Red Woman with her please. Sansa might be a founding member of Team Bad Decisions but at least she isn’t acting all doe eyed and afraid since she decided to subscribe to the Use what you got to get what you want philosophy so lets see how far it takes her. Baelish is the devil.

Dany is gonna be a force to reckon with but locking up the dragons might come back to bite her or should I say burn her. Jon Snow might be king one day. IDK why I feel this way but he’s proven himself to be a great leader also two tear drops for your dead love c’mon bruh. I am not here for Ramsay or Stannis. I wanna feel bad for The on but he betrayed Robb soo…Also the Red Wedding man listen I wasn’t ready. I had to put down the up and and walk away because I had all the sads.

I really didn’t expect to much from the finale tbh since there was so much going on in the penultimate episode as per usual. However when Tyrion shot his pops in the shitter with two arrows I cackled and cheered ain’t nobody got time for Tywin aka Numpsie from The Golden Child.

I know come next season shit is gonna be too real and I am officially a fan of this show. Did I mention I love Arya and Tyrion okay bye 🙂

Poor Theon. He is a sure candidate for a pysch ward, Ramsay Bolton is one evil SOB. I think he will be an excellent partner/lover for Cersei. I can imagine what evil their demon spawn will wreak, Joffrey will be an angel in comparison.

I enjoyed the finale. However, they packed A LOT into one episode which really didn’t allow much time to process. I mean they pretty much closed the loop on everyone’s story line (and started a new one :).
Poor Arya has been roaming from one death to another. I am glad to see her finally strike out on her own. I have read the books and was happy to see something added that was better! The fight between Brienne and the Hound was EPIC!!! OMG it was so visceral and just hard to even watch but, I loved it!
I did think that Stannis’ arrival at the wall was anti-climatic. :-/
I almost cried when Dany chained up her dragons. 🙁
But, Tyrion woooooo! That was a long time coming!

Great episode. I can’t wait to watch it again!

Good recap Luvvie. I like the episode, while I had expected a bit more fireworks, I think the overall tone worked well. Two scene broke my heart:-
    (1) Dany and her dragons. Bro Friendzone had warned her they were getting out of control and she did not listen, now it has come to this. Dany, needs to listen to her advisers more; she will avoid heartache in the future.

    (2) Arya and the Hound. While I did not like the Hound at first, he grew on me. It is really pathetic to see what he was reduced to, living buzzard fodder. Arya should have been more sympathetic, but she has left innocence behind. To quote Buju ,”Circumstance made me what I am”, and hers had hardened her. I hope she does not loose too much of her humanity.

My boo boo love came through for me. I am only sorry Tyrion did not have a bazooka to blast a friggin big hole in Tywin. But he made do well enough.

I do not know if anyone else did , but I teared up when I saw Pip and Grenn’s bodies lying on that funeral pyre.

I hope a couple of wights and white walkers get Stannis and Melisandre. They are too freaking cold, so will fit right in.

Ah well , I shall have to wait another 10 months for my fix, until then, I shall have to finish reading and then rereading the books. I think I missed a couple of important details.

I wonder if anyone will be converting Terry Pratchett’s books to screen format, I think the Discworld book will make interesting viewing.

  18. June 16, 2014 at 5:38 pm

I have not read any of the books except the first one (I’m way behind), but word on the curb is that they left out a lot of pertinent info that would have made the final episode make more sense, and perhaps not feel as rushed (some of these things have been alluded to in previous comments).

I’ve also heard that starting with season 5, the shows will take a major departure from the books, a la True Blood/the”Sookie Stackhouse” novels by Charlaine Harris. If this is true, I’m not sure how to feel about it; I gave up on True Blood after season 3 because it Greg Louganised over the shark. I was only there for Lafayette’s character, anyway. *shrug*

Back to the GoT season finale:
–Jon had his final goodbye with his boo, Ygritte (who was also his first lover–y’all ‘member that?). This made me sad.
–I liked Tywin’s OG self. Part of the reason he hated Tyrion so much was that it was hard for him to reconcile how much Tyrion was like him, mentally and spiritually, and how much Jaime (and Cersei) were not. Also, didn’t Tyrion look like his mother? I’ll miss him. But Tyrion got yet another piece of revenge, in that he took Tywin’s dignity as well as his life (to get capped on the toilet, instead of in a blaze of glory on the battlefield?)
–Varys is smart. He knew something was shady when Tyrion showed up on his doorstep, looking majorly…whatever look/body language gives off the vibe that something very bad has happened; the claw marks on his face from his fight with Shae was a good indicator. Remember, first thing out of his mouth was, “What have you done?” He was on his way back to the castle when those bells tolled. Since he didn’t need to ask for whom the bell tolled (since they only did so for members of the royal family), he put two and two together and raised up with Tyrion. He probably figured that he would not be safe in the castle and could very well end up with HIS head on a pike (especially if Cersei gets her way), so might as well check out the view somewhere else.
–Shae: a ho is just a ho, and that’s without a controversy.
–Jaime: bros before hoes! However, I got a feeling that this may be the last time he shtups Cersei; things are about to get ugly and Cersei is going to be completely buck wild, with no Tywin to keep her in check. Jaime is already not liking what he’s seen in her; time away from her has made his vision clearer.
–Brienne and The Hound’s fight. Wooooo! Brienne took that cunt punt like a G. She would have made a good mentor for Arya, had she not been down with the Lannisters (sidebar: I’m still holding out hope for a Brienne/Jaime hookup)
–Arya is about to work on her Gangsta badge in Braavos. In a way, I ain’t mad at her. What’s left for her in Westeros? Even if she was reunited with Sansa, or left with Brienne, she can’t fit back into the old ways, not that she ever did in the first place. Bran is off getting his Third Eye, and Jon can’t take care of her since he’s now sworn to the Night’s Watch. (BTW: where are Rickon and Osha?) Arya went from her dad’s house, to Yoren’s (the Night Watch dude who got killed) watch, to Tywin’s watch in captivity, to the Brotherhood’s watch, to The Hound’s watch. In a way, she was no better off than Sansa. She needs to go and figure out who she is, and make her own decisions within that process.

Ten more months…maybe I will catch up on the books.

I have often been told that Stannis is an amazing character in the books. His entrance with his huge army finally made me see a glimpse of that. He can be badass when he’s not being manipulated by ginger coochie.

Speaking of Melisandre, I don’t know exactly why she was eyeing Jon Snow over the flames the way she was. But to quote the great Nivea, “it was hard to find a brotha that was down for me, so I’m tellin’ everybody let him be, cause he’s mine and I can’t take no pigeons tryna take my baby”. OK, RED?

Cersei thinks she’s smart but I swear, she’s really dumb. Qyburn specifically told her that if fixed, The Mountain will be even stronger and she still said yes. She’s creating a monster and she can’t even see it. I hope he kills her ass.

Daenerys continues to annoy me. Last season, after the “Mhysa, Mhysa, Mhysa” scene, I realized that she would become a terrible leader lol. She just craves love and admiration, which makes sense considering how her childhood was with that crazy brother of hers, but she doesn’t know how to rule. Her crazy dragon has been doing hoodrat shit for awhile now and it took a dead body for her to do something.

The Bran/Hodor/Jojen/Meera fight with the skeletons was so, so good. The scene inside the tree was giving me whack Grandmother Willow realness though. But I’m curious to see what will happen with Bran’s flying.

Between the tight hug, the kiss and the “Farewell, little brother”, Jaime and Tyrion gave me all the feels :’(

    And then Tyrion snapped…
Of the 3, Tyrion is the one whose personality is the closest to Tywin’s imo. But since Grandpa Lannister was arrogant, he always underestimated his children. That’s why he went too far and died while doing number 2.

Anyway, I agree that this episode had a lot of information to digest but season 4 entertained me far more than the previous one. So, overall, I’m happy with GoT.

Daenerys’s dragons were barbecuing kids almost from the time they could breathe fire (remember, they burned some children and that was when Ser Jorah Friendzone told her that no matter how much she loved them, they were still dragons). This was just the straw on the camel’s back, and she HAD to do something or risk upending her carefully contrived “benevolent” kingdom. Folks will riot over children being hurt for no reason, and she can’t have that.

I do find myself wishing her to be the next to be skewed on the barby, though.

If Mance just really wanted to get to the other side of the wall… Why did he attack? That’s some bull…

Also…. How did Stannis manage to bring so big an army to the Real North without the Crows noticing?

I liked this ending. It tied up things nicely until 2015. Unlike previous finales….

Half the Crows were dead from the brouhaha with the Wildings & Co. The other half were injured, exhausted, and/or trying to deal with the dead bodies. All of Westeros could have rolled up on them and they wouldn’t have noticed. LOL

I cant believe danny is locking up her dragons. Its really going to stunt their growth, just like a fish in a small pond. Check out this music video of Khaleesi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg3r23I5SC8

I feel like more needs to be said about the WAY Vareys was out! I laughed so hard at that for so many days. His face went from “whew Tyrions safe” to “Huh? Nope. Nawl. Nah-uh.” so quickly when he heard those bells. lol
