What I Wore to the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon
I don’t go to crazy fancy events often but when I do, I like to step out and be Gone with the Wind Fabulous.
It was like deja vu because two years ago, I was in LA for the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon (and the Oscars) with my ace, Afrobella, and we had the same Glam squad then as we do now. It’s so fascinating to see what a difference two years can make and how far we’ve come.
Our dresses were custom made by the best seamstress EVER, Olivia Diggs-Ogbara (aka Dressmaker by Olivia). Olivia is my go-to person for #alphets when I have special events and she’s made me such great pieces (for the Red Pump show, for SMWLagos etc.).
This time, I called her a week before the event and said “I need a dress.” I sent her a picture (from Pinterest) of what I had in mind and she took it above and beyond that. My only extra instruction was “make the back interesting” and this is what she came up with:
LOVED IT! I got so many compliments on this dress, so thank you for having me TOGETHER Olivia! She’s in Chicago, but she travels so holler at her.
Now, about my hair. I call her the “Hair Whisperer.” My friend and celebrity hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood (@LovingYourHair) did my hair for the 2012 Academy Awards. She’s one of three total people I trust implicitly with my coiffure because she always has it LAIDT like fresh grass.
My signature fancy hairdo is up in the front and down in the back. Like a mullet that actually looks nice. HA! So Felicia pulled some to the front and pinned them to my left side.
Here’s a closer look:
YES, MA’AM! Felicia’s in LA but the lady travels more than most planes so hit her up!
And of course, I got my face done/did/together by the dope Nicole Evans (@NEvansMUA) again! I have a very sharp face and this isn’t always a good thing because one wrong turn can have me looking like a cartoon villain. All these angles in my face.
But Nicole is about that awesome makeup artistry life. She even convinced me to use eyelashes. My eyes are sensitive to stuff so I usually shy away from extra things like lashes but she tried it and I liked them!
TA-DA!
Thank you to the Dream Team Glam Squad for making a gal feel and look amazing! I’m looking forward to the next fancy occasion where I get to tap on these ladies again. Next year’s ESSENCE event, mayhaps?
Oh wait! I almost forgot my shoes! Y’all know those are important. I decided to rep The Red Pump Project and #RocktheRedPump so I had on these GUESS platform pumps I’ve had for a couple of years (but only worn once).
