3 Lessons From the Potato Salad Kickstarter Campaign That’s Raised Over $22,000
There’s a KickStarter campaign for potato salad and it’s made over $22,000. A guy posted a campaign on Kickstarter about how he wants to make potato salad and he set the goal to $10. Well, he’s now raised $22,500 (as of 3pm CST on July 7, 2014) with 25 days left. 1,750 people have contributed to this campaign, which clearly started as a dude trolling everyone. The interwebs responded by giving hella money.
UPDATE: IT IS NOW $44,000+, 2 hours after I wrote this post.
I’m not sure what feels I am supposed to have. Some people prosper in spite of themselves. Some people work to the bone and still only get half way to their goal. This dude posted a joke and made $22,000 from it. GENIUS!
I want to laugh. In fact, it’s hilarious. It REALLY is. Until you realize that people love crappy stuff and won’t bat an eye to give to it. This has me thinking that instead of throwing hateration in the guy’s dancerie, we should learn from this.
1. The more useless your campaign, the better.
Who wants to support stuff that makes sense? NOT ME! That’s boring and it brings my mojo way down. What we all need is more potato salad, especially when it doesn’t even look half delicious. AMIRITE?
I’ve seen people’s asks for money to fix their busted spleen go ignored. But TATER SALAD BY A DUDE WHO ADMITS HE CAN’T COOK? WE MUST ALL SUPPORT IT.
Reading Rainbow is the most successful kickstarter of all time and I am a proud backer of that. But for every Reading Rainbow campaign, there are 10 potato salads.
b. Be a white dude.
Because who else could post a potato salad campaign and raise all the money in the world? White dudebros. Seriously. Who else? Melanin-deficiency privilege is sweet! If you click on the backers of the campaign, they’re mostly… *drum roll* WHITE DUDES!
iii. Kickstarter has jumped the shark
When projects like this make so much money while most are struggling, it tells me that the platform has peaked. People create these campaigns for the dumbest reasons so important ones get lost in the sauce.
Crowdfunding is the new black but I’ll be dambed if it ain’t officially getting on my nerves because of the foolishness of some of it. I am a believer in asking your community/village to help you reach your goals but folks are really trying it now.
Congrats to Zach Danger Brown on this come up but it does make me want to hit my head on a desk repeatedly.
You know what some other folks could do with $22,000? It’d be more substantial than some dry ass tater salad. Ugh.
Yes, I’m totally hating on this now. The feels I’ve settled on is now extreme irritation.
Update at 5:16 pm CST on July 7, 2014: THAT POTATO SALAD KICKSTARTER IS UP TO $44,000! I AM SO MAD AT EVERYTHING!!! That is more than people make in one year of work! GAAAHHHHH!!! *kicks every trashcan in my house*
UPDATE again at 6pm: The amount pledged to the campaign has dropped to $16,000. People probably reduced their pledges. There might be hope for us all yet.

OM… WOW! I had no idea this even existed. I just goggled it and came back to this page to try it out… Hearing Siri exclaim “AMIRITE?!” was hilarious! LMMFAO! Thanks!
i dont know whether to be impressed or cry…lol…and they say black people always got a hand out for something….
I give up on this planet. Where is the emergency break so I can get off and walk to the next stop?
Meanwhile, a friend has a gofundme trying to raise money to go back to school and become a teacher. The response is just $25. I don’t understand.
I too have a gofundme account active right now to raise money to start my own small business (gofundme.com/noelledreamsbig) and can I just say I am BEYOND pissed that this is happening! I am trying to raise start up money so I DON’T create new debt to get this off the ground and you have assholes doing this sort of thing?! I think I am even more frustrated at the people who are actually donating to this dudes campaign. Ugh! I am super with all of it!
WOW!!!!
I wonder if the Saints could use that stuff for spackle?
Like you said – whiteness is power! This is literally the absolute dumbest kickstarter I’ve seen to date, yet he’s got 22 Gs. #MeldItMoses Chile.
My ability to can…just won’t! This world is a freaking wrap hit the reset button already!
I’m DONE and DONE! I had a GoFundMe to raise $20K to start an online TV network for African Americans so we could have a place to stop airing foolishment and fuggery and I got crickets. This bastid raised $44k to make a $5 batch of ‘tata salad!? *bites pew like Mama Payne*
*moves out of your way when you -Mama Payne- start running down the isle*
Umm…so where and how do I do this? Seriously!!
Are his black friends making the potato salad, #OrNah? Because otherwise, why bother? The fact that his campaign is officially more than my salary has me wanting to block him from buying any type of mayo. I wish nothing but rotten eggs in his culinary shenanigans. I Quit.
I’m going to create a Kickstarter campaign for ice. Not just any old kind of ice, but cold ice. If you steal my idea, may an aardvark attack your feet while you sleep.
I got 5 on it. It IS authentic tap water right?
“may an aardvark attack your feet while you sleep.” this is going to give me nightmares
Falls. Allaway. Out.
Right now, a bill collector is calling my house from all the money that I owed after my family was homeless for a little while. So I have one good, solid feeling about this crowd funding campaign:
Useless.
The person who wanted to make the potato salad is Useless for taking away money from something that could have went to help improve someone’s else’s life/campaign, and the people who contributed to it are useless too.
And I say this as the phone keeps ringing for bills, and none for jobs. *shrug* That’s America for you.
Sorry for the poor grammar. I just woke up from a nap.
But still, this campaign sucks balls.
I’m gonna start a kickstarter so people will give me money for just staring at a bottle of hot sauce. That’s it. Just staring a bottle of hot sauce. Cause I am officially *brain dead* after hearing about $44,000 for somebody’s, ahem, salad to be tossed.
Is it Frank’s?
On KS PS Watch: Why is it now only $17,000+ ?
something hinky about this kickstarted other than privilege. i’ve seen it go up to $45K and then back down to $15K and two hours later it’s $38K. makes me think kickstarter wants this to be a story.
That better be some good potato salad, too. Good enough to make me forget my grandmother’s…
Well damn….my daddy’s potato salad is worth $44,000…..we could pay off a mortgage with that kind of grip. Now to find one of my old, grandfatherly looking white friends to use as a front……
1. There are at least 4 potato salad kickstarter campaigns
2. my paternal grandmother turns 100 on Aug 12. Our family is traveling to Guatemala to share in her joy. Just the airfare is $6000.00 I should have started a kick starter campaign.
3. the 9th ward in New Orleans is still a desolate flat land meanwhile we are building up other countries like Iraq and funding potato salad kick starter campaigns.
I hate life
I set up a gofundme to help buy a refrigerator when my 20 year old fridge died. A REFRIGERATOR! Donations to date: $-0.00 I still have my perishables in a cooler in the kitchen. I’m buying ice erryother day! I work 50 hour weeks and can’t afford to keep my potato salad cold! #IHatePeople
I’m really starting to think that sites like KickStarter and GoFundMe need to review these proposals before approving them, and letting people do this kind of stuff. Granted, no one is being forced to contribute, but it takes away from the meaningful campaigns on those sites.
