Those Steve Madden Slide-Ins We All Had: Throwback Thursday

There was a time when clogs and slide-in shoes were all the rage. Were we just too lazy to buckle shoes? Were flip flops just too invasive to our toes? I don’t know why these got so popular but they totally did and when I saw the picture below, I cackled from my spirit. The memories of the many tacky alphets that accompanied these came flooding back and I shook my head. Good times.

steve madden slides

Get into the platform because we need extra height without feeling like we’re wearing heels. But that black bandage across the top, though? HA! You’d wear this in the summer and your feet would be sweating because it was made of unbreathable rubber and it wrapped around your feet like a band-aid.

Let you not put on lotion good enough. Your entire big toe would be blistered at the end of a day of walking around at the Taste of Chicago in these. And if you had on too much lotion, you’d be slipping and sliding like a fool. And the tan that came from it? HILARITY!

How could your feet be so hot and breezy at the same gahtdamb time? Everyone’s aunty owned these. She’d wear them with the floral flowy floor-length dresses that buttoned from neck to ankle. You know good and damb well what dressed I’m talmbout too.

Steve Madden sold the heck out these open-toed mules! And there were a bunch of knock offs, of course. Chile… there were at least 5 pairs in my house alone.

Do y’all remember these shoes? Did you own a pair? You can admit it here. We’re family. No judgment.

OMG!!! I remember these, and for some reason I was really just thinking about shoes like these today. And that’s dress with all the buttons was from “the Buckle” lmao!!!

    Thanks for the throwback

  2. April 3, 2014 at 11:25 am

I am DYING laughing. These shoes, a pair of high-waisted jeans and a black tank top and girl you were READY TO GO OUT. Yes, I had them. Probably bought at Marshall’s though… cuz I’m cheap.

These shoes were a low moment in shoe history. Thank goodness the Steve Madden brand found taste and fashion somewhere along the way cause damn, those were horrible.

  4. April 3, 2014 at 11:29 am

Hell yes I had these! They “went with everything”!

    • December 4, 2014 at 11:33 pm

Bahahaha went with everything and nothing at the same damn time. WHY did we think these were cute??

Not ashamed to say I had a pair of these and I LOVED THEM! I used to wear these joints everywhere. Light on the top and heavy as hell on the bottom. Don’t mess around and let your foot slide all the way to front…”down goes Frazier! down goes Frazier!”

Yeah that happened to me a couple of times….

  9. April 3, 2014 at 11:43 am

I used to love these joints…

Now Steve Madden has gone from comfy slides that made blisters…to basic b*Tch stripper wear featuring a line by Keyshia Cole (I saw it today on Heels * Com). I was devastated as strippers rejoiced everywhere. My soul weeps…. *sigh*

      I had to take a peak….

What. In. The. Name. Of. All. That. Is. Holy!!!!!!!!!
Those shoes scream lack of a real job and common sense.
If your friend tells you the Keyshia Cole shoes look good on you, she is not your real friend.

Oh, but you MUST get your lives from the “How Others Wore It” section of the shoe site:

    • Lisa
      April 3, 2014 at 12:10 pm

  15. itsben1
    April 3, 2014 at 12:37 pm

    • jimmy
      April 4, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Used to rock them (knock offs off course) with Duck Head shorts here in SC. So ashamed.

  17. April 3, 2014 at 12:53 pm

I was crying laughing while looking at these. I definitely had a couple of pairs that I bought from Century 21 and Aldo. I also had a lot of polyester clothing when I wore these. I remember dressing up for an event with my polyester/spandex/rayon blend bodycon dress, these slides and my coach purse. Talk about the ultimate in shabby chic….LOL
These were easily the go to shoes for all occasions back then, especially after you broke them in.I would wear them to work come home, shower change and put them back on for a night on the town. I am so ashamed..LOL

  18. April 3, 2014 at 12:55 pm

Oh my gosh. Those %$#@! shoes are the reason I face-planted in the middle of the office one morning in [year redacted] with both hands full of papers. I join those who are asking: #whyithappen

  19. Lisa
    April 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm

Um, I still have mine. And it wouldn’t take much for me to wear them. But alas, I still have double-breasted suits – but at least I don’t wear them. :-/

  20. Brittany
    April 3, 2014 at 1:23 pm

Girls really thought they was on when they rocked these with a middle toe-ring. *Sigh* Oh 90s fashion, lmao

Dat toe ring doe…and it jeeeeeest might be one with my initial OR a dangling charm…

  21. April 3, 2014 at 1:42 pm

I still have a pair by Aerosoles only the bottom part is beige not black. In my defense, I only wear them around the house.

  22. Delight
    April 3, 2014 at 2:00 pm

Yeah, I had a pair of these way back when. Although, I thought I was too cute and bought the ones that were twice as high, so I could be that much taller in them. I was 5’0 back then and walking around in a shoe that weighed almost as much as the backpack I had to rock for school. I really think the only bottoms that looked good/decent/whathaveyou with these were denim; I stayed in jean skirts at the time. Yup, definitely on team #whyithappen

Definitely had a pair! Used to wear a toe ring with them and these shoes, jeans, and a white tank top were my summer uniform! I laughed so hard when I just saw this on fb!

  26. Neesh
    April 3, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Mos def had these and wore them with everything! These are the reason why I dropped my then infant sister in the Pathmark near the dairy aisle lol

    April 3, 2014 at 5:48 pm

People on FB said it but not here, rocked these bad boys with capris and short pants faithfully in addition to the skirts with slits on both sides of the leg. Baby tees and tank tops from Old Navy, Rave/Rainbow/etc. and thought I was STYLIN. But like others said #whyithappen?

    • Jackie
      April 4, 2014 at 7:48 am

I second the skirt/dress with slits on both sides of the leg…THAT was my uniform with various types of platform shoes, these included.

I have a co-worker who *gasp* still wears them! #whyithappen?

    April 3, 2014 at 6:27 pm

I had my youngest in November 2001 & these were the only shoes I COULD wear! That stretchy part on top saved me. Maternity clothes, hose, & these shoes in cold-as-hell November cuz that’s all that would fit on my swollen feet. #pregnancyshoes

  29. April 3, 2014 at 11:20 pm

not only did i have the black Steve Madden ones – i had a brown pair and a cream pair made my Sam & Libby – and because i love in Texas, we wore ours with Daisy Duke shorts! ahh, the good old days …

    OT Luvvie,

    For a fellow LupitaStan:

Lancome Taps Lupita Nyong’o as New Face
NEW YORK April 4, 2014 (AP)

The fashion and beauty industry’s love affair with Lupita Nyong’o
continues: The Oscar winner has been named the new face for Lancome.

The Mexican-born Kenyan will be the first black ambassador for the
brand, which features Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz and
Lily Collins as spokeswomen. In a statement Friday, Nyong’o said she was proud to represent Lancome, adding “beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.”

It’s the first major endorsement deal for the 31-year-old, who won the
best-supporting Oscar for her role in “12 Years a Slave.” Her striking
beauty and fashion sense made her the It Girl for the Hollywood awards
    season.

Lancome ads featuring Nyong’o will start appearing this summer.

A pair of these, my flare jeans, and my belly tee that said something like “brat” or “cute” or some nonsense on the front ctfu. Why Lawd WHY??!?! Couldn’t tell me I wasn’t cute!

    April 9, 2014 at 8:08 pm

I had my baby shower for my first born daughter (I was eighteen) in August of 2000 and I wore these with a jean/spandex mixed spaghettis strapped mini dress with a huge glitter butter fly across the bust.

The saddest part about this story is that my now 13 year old daughter recently wore that same dress she found in the back of my closet. SMH…

http://www.heels.com/shoe-brand/keyshia-cole, Luvvie you’re a computer whiz, is there a way that we can make this whole link disappear? I was so upset that she felt these were normal people cute…

  37. May 30, 2014 at 12:51 pm

Oh lordo, these shoes. So heavy! So clunky! And a hot summer day wearing those mofos around? The tops of your feet looked like a particularly ripe zombie on the Walking Dead. And don’t get me started on the sweating. Only thing worse in that era? RAFFIA. Don’t get me started on raffia. Oh by all means, let’s BIND OUR FEET WITH ROPE, because THAT will end well. Jesus himself didn’t get torture like raffia wedges.

  40. FunnieBunnie
    December 4, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Hell, I still have mine. And I still rock them, every summer. Got em from Bakers and my bandage is leather. I had them on during the blackout of 2004. I hadda walk miles and miles in those things to get home. Callouses and blisters for weeks afterwards. I keep a pair of sneakers under my desk. Lesson learned the hard callous way.

  41. Elizabeth
    December 4, 2014 at 11:05 pm

How about – rocking a red pair…and sashaying down the middle of NYC streets and literally falling OUT of the shoes on the yellow line. I almost got laid out from these heel heavy slides! Lol
